Talking Crow Studio presents ~ Recycled Art Recycled plastic art projects created throughout November by students at Del Norte High School and the Community Day School have been on display since December 23 at Talking Crow Studio and will remain up through January 22. Crescent Harbor Gallery presents ~ Artist of the Month The artist of the month for January at Crescent Harbor Gallery is Sandy Bonney. A Brookings, OR based artist, Bonney's favorite medium is pastels, though she also works in oils and watercolor. A self-taught artist, Bonney says the biggest step in improving her work has come from attending workshops, given by artists such as Jan Kunz, Maggie Price, George Strickland and Bonnie Swart. A sampling of her works is on display through the end of the month, along with pieces by other gallery members. DNACA presents ~ Reception for Art in Public Places Exhibit The current Art in Public Places exhibit up in the courthouse is DNACA's 18th Annual Juried Multimedia Exhibition, featuring 15 works by local artists. There will be a public closing reception for the artists from 5 to 6 p.m., featuring refreshments and live music, as well as an award ceremony. Awards went to Bonnie Loewen for her acrylic painting "A Garden Talk" (first place), George Cady for his black and white photograph "Chimayo Crosses" (second place) and John Tynes for his color photograph "Sunset near Lost Creek Lake" (third place). Crescent City Art Walk Ten Crescent City galleries, studios, organizations and businesses will be part of an Art Walk in both the downtown Crescent City and the Crescent City Harbor areas. The public is encouraged to turn out and walk from venue to venue (where possible) at their own leisure, enjoying the local/regional artwork on display. In addition to DNACA's reception at the Courthouse, sites participating in the art walk are The Daily Triplicate, the Gallery of Arts & Culture, Tomasini's Enoteca, Del Norte County Library, KHSU/KHSR Studio, Mary Dorman-State Farm Insurance, Bay Studios, Crescent Harbor Gallery and Talking Crow Studio. Lighthouse Repertory Theatre presents ~ "Doubt" Lighthouse Repertory Theatre's production of "Doubt" opens at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 22 in the multipurpose room at Joe Hamilton School, and will play for two weekends. The 2009 movie version of John Patrick Shanley's "Doubt" featured Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams, and was nominated for five Academy Awards. This drama is rated PG-13 for mature subject matter. Tickets cost $12 for adults and $8 for children under 18 and seniors over 55, and are available at Del Norte Office Supply and the door. DNACA presents ~ California Guitar Trio DNACA presents the third performance of its 27th season -- California Guitar Trio -- at 2 p.m. in the Crescent Elk Auditorium. Not your usual guitar trio -- and not originally from California -- these three gentlemen play steel string guitars, and hail from Belgium (Bert Lams), Japan (Hideo Moriya) and Utah (Paul Richards). They met while apprenticing in Robert Fripp's Guitar Craft workshops, and their whirlwind of instrumental styles fuses jazz, country, classical/originals and even California style "surf music." Crescent Harbor Gallery presents ~ Art Demo by The demonstration artist of the month for the Coast Redwoods Art Association is Elio Camacho, who will begin his demo at noon on Thursday, Jan. 28 at Crescent Harbor Gallery. Born in 1972 on the island of Madeira, hundreds of miles south of Portugal, Camacho immigrated in 1975 to California with his family. He fell in love with the work of master impressionists such as Bongart, Sorrolla, Fechin and particularly the Russian impressionists. Del Norte High School Music presents ~ "Sweets & Treats" The Del Norte High School stage band, in conjunction with Tsunami Swing, will play host to "Sweets & Treats," a swing dance concert. Redwoods Mural Society presents ~ Dance the Night Away The Redwoods Mural Society will present a community mural benefit including a silent auction from 6:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. in the Veterans Memorial Hall. Free dance lessons will be held from 7 to 7:30 p.m., followed by a brief mural society presentaion. Dancing begins at 7:30 p.m., with music deejayed by Mark Machelli of Evergreen Sound & Lighting. Mark Renner, instructor of geology, earth and information sciences is currently on exhibit at the College of the Redwoods, Del Norte. The show features local flora and ocean views with special attention to detail and light. Renners show will be on display through March 15 in the main hallway gallery at the college. College of the Redwoods, Del Norte presents ~ Evening of Poetry DNACA and College of the Redwoods, Del Norte present a poetry reading in the college library by two San Francisco Bay area poets. William Keener will read from his award-winning chapbook Gold Leaf on Granite, a 2008 Anabiosis Press publication. Dave Seter will read from Night Duty, a 2010 Main Street Rag publication. Keener and Seter will also give a poetry writing workshop at 4 p.m. on Thursday, February 25 at the Del Norte Senior Center, 1765 Northcrest Dr., Crescent City, CA. Both events are free and open to the public (though donations toward future readings are welcomed), and are supported by Poets & Writers, Inc.through a grant it received from the James Irvine Foundation. InnerSpark Deadline The California State Summer School for the Arts (InnerSpark) is seeking the most talented high school-aged visual, literary, media and performing artists in California. The teenagers who are selected through the competitive application process will attend one of the country's premier summer arts institues on the campus of the California Institute of the Arts, in Valencia, from July 10 through August 6, 2010. Crescent Harbor Gallery presents ~ Artist of the Month Watercolorist Carmen Hollinsead is the artist of the month for March at Crescent Harbor Gallery. Hollinsead didn't learn to paint until she retired, but the arts have always permeated her family. Her work has been accepted in juried shows and she has a myriad of ribbons and awards for her work including the "Late Bloomer" award at the Oregon Festival of the Arts. Hollinsead has studied with regional painters Marleen Olive, Doroth Ishoy, Duane Light, Rick Bennett and Audi Stanton. Coast Redwoods Art Association presents ~ Art Demo by Bonnie Swart The demonstration artist of the month for the Coast Redwoods Art Association is Bonnie Swart, who will begin her demo at noon. When living in southern California, Swart started a course of art studies including classes at Ventura College and workshops with a number of accomplished, nationally known instructors such as Jan Kunz, Don Ricks, William Herring, Donald Puttman and Judi Betts. While helping her husband Carter research racing articles at the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association library, she began painting Thoroughbreds and the general racetrack scene. Her work can be found in the collections of numerous Thoroughbred and Arabian breeders, owners, and trainers. Hues & Values" The new Art in Public Places exhibit up beginning March 22 in the courthouse is a one-person show by Smith River artist Bonnie Loewen. Loewen has only been painting since 2008, and won the first place award in DNACA's 18th Annual Juried Multimedia Exhibition. Loewen paints regularly with a talented group of local and regional artists; in particular, Amy Hallock, Lynda O'Neill, Keith Sluder, Gus Gustafson are among her mentors. Loewen's show, titled "A Premier Exhibit of Eclectic Shades, Hues & Values" will hang through May 21.
