Crescent Harbor Gallery presents ~ Photographs Due for Juried Show Those those who have entered the Coast Redwoods Art Association's Juried Photo Show should bring their works to the gallery between 1 and 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1. Recology Del Norte presents ~ "Recycled Art Time" Recology Del Norte needs clean, high gloss magazines that are children content-friendly for children's art projects. The magazines are needed for collages and mosaics, with subjects such as gardening, building, clothing, sewing, car and truck, mechanic, fishing, boating, travel, and nature. Also applicable are catalogs for cooking, furniture, tools, etc. Deliver donations to the office at 2675 Lake Earl Drive (707) 464-4181, where they will be accepted through the end of January. This group provides rich vocal harmonies with instrumental accompaniment, bringing songs steeped in Appalachia and Eastern Europe. Community Concert Association presents ~ Carpe Diem String Quartet The Del Norte-Curry Community Concert Association presents its first performance of the 2011-12 season -- America's premiere "indie" ensemble Carpe Diem String Quartet -- in the Crescent Elk Auditorium. Single tickets at the door are $15 each, with a discount for students. Friends of Music presents ~ Frank Wiens The Friends of Music presents Frank Wiens, pianist, at the Calvary Assembly of God Church, 518 Fir Street in Brookings. Wiens will be performing an all Spanish music program. Tickets at the door cost $15 for adults, and students age 17 and under are free.

Crescent Harbor Gallery presents ~ Audi Stanton The art demonstration of the month at Crescent Harbor Gallery will be given by Brookings painter Audi Stanton, preceded by a potluck. The exhibit on display at the gallery until Oct. 30 is the Coast Redwoods Art Association's annual Juried Photo Show. First place was awarded to Laure Zugzda for her photograph "War Games." Lighthouse Repertory Theare present ~ Family Halloween Dance Tsunami Swing and Lighthouse Repertory Theatre are producing a family-friendly Halloween Dance at the VFW Hall, 810 H Street. Come and enjoy local talent, and any profit from this event will be shared between the band and LRT for its building fund. Tsunami Swing plays a variety of music from Glenn Miller to Santana. Del Norte County Library presents ~ Spooky Storyteller The Del Norte County Library presents spooky storyteller Carpathian from Humboldt County. In conjunction with Smith River Rancheria Community and Family Services, Carpathian will also appear at 3:30 p.m. the same day at the Howonquet Community Center in Smith River. DNACA presents ~ DNACA Season Tickets DNACA season tickets are on sale at Del Norte Office Supply, Wright's Custom Framing in Brookings, and from DNACA board members. The association's 29th annual performance series begins on Monday, Nov. 7 with the nontraditional bluegrass/new folk music of Crooked Still. Other performances include African guitarist/percussionist Alpha Yaya Diallo, gospel and blues-infused singer/songwriter Eric Bibb, traditional Veracruz folk musicians Tlen-Huicani, and country rock legend Pure Prairie League. Crescent Harbor Gallery presents ~ Artist of the Month The artist of the month at Crescent Harbor Gallery is Philip Wadsworth, who works in oil on canvas, pastels, and a little watercolor, plus sculpture, jewelry and furniture. A two-wall sampling of his paintings are on display until Nov. 30, along with pieces by other gallery members. Note there will be no art demonstration in November. Also, there are two new classes available to members: one is an informal collage/assemblage workshop with Reni Schaefer starting at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 2, and the other is a beginning drawing class with artist Rob Decker from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 4 ($5 donation requested). Awards went to: Tom Moody for "Home Harbor" (acrylic, first place); Philip Wadsworth for "Pitigliano Italy" (acrylic, second place); Larry Depee for "Music Man" (digital photograph, third place) and "A Peaceful Moment" by Carol Schach (digital photograph, honorable mention). Art Walk The third Crescent City Art Walk of 2011 will take place in the downtown and harbor areas. Lighthouse Repertory Theare present ~ "Nuncrackers" Lighthouse Repertory Theatre's production of "Nuncrackers" runs for two weekends. Show times are 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 p.m. on Sundays. There will also be a special showing at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday Nov. 3, where admission costs only $5 with an unwrapped children's toy for Operation Santa. DNACA presents ~ Crooked Still DNACA presents the first performance of its 29th season, the east coast-based Crooked Still. This acoustic quintet plays nontraditional bluegrass/new folk/old-time American music, and features a banjo player, fiddler, cellist, double bass player and guitarist/vocalist. "Your expectations of how bluegrass and old-time classics should be performed will be turned on its ear," wrote Vintage Guitar magazine.

Bead For Life The second annual Bead For Life Wine & Cheese Party will be held at Michael's Salon, 731 H Street, hosted by Maureen Jahn and Barb Ringgold. On sale will be unique, recycled necklaces, bracelets, earrings and loose beads, the proceeds from which helps eradicate poverty in Uganda, providing income, food, medicine, school fees and hope. The Curry/Del Norte Orchestra presents ~ Symphony By the Sea The Curry/Del Norte Orchestra will give its annual trio of winter concerts on Dec. 3 to 5 in Gold Beach, Crescent City and Brookings, respectively. Featured will be former Gasquet resident Morgan O'Shaughnessey, a recent graduate of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, who will perform Max Bruch's "Kol Nidrei, Op. 47" for viola and orchestra. O'Shaughnessey -- an active soloist and pioneer of new music -- has presented numerous recitals and premiered over two dozen solo viola works in the last four years, and has recently begun developing a side career as a seven-string electric violinist (visit www.moshalto.com online for more information). The orchestra's performance in Crescent City will be at 3 p.m. on Dec. 4 at Elk Valley Rancheria, 2332 Howland Hill Rd. The Brookings concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 5 in the Trinity Lutheran Church, 1200 Easy St. Students through grade 12 will be admitted free. The Gallery of Arts & Culture presents ~ Winter Show Reception The Gallery of Arts & Culture will hold a reception for its winter show on Friday at 175 H Street. Music will be provided by Steve Berg, and refreshments will be served. The exhibit contains a variety of media including acrylic, alcohol ink, oil, and watercolor paintings, fused and stained glass, ceramics, textiles, Gyotaku/custom fish printing, giclee and block prints, hand woven scarves and shawls, turned wood bowls, jewelry, and greeting cards by Lloyd Kirkpatrick, BJ Clausen, and Michelle Jones. Crescent Harbor Gallery presents ~ Artist of the Month The artist of the month for January at Crescent Harbor Gallery is Ruby Brewer Lucking. A native mid-southerner, Lucking currently resides in Crescent City, where she works in oil, watercolor, acrylic, bronze sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, pencil and markers. Her artwork is inspired by Monet and other artists of the impressionist and postimpressionist movements. A sampling of her work is currently on display, along with pieces by other gallery members. DNACA presents ~ Alpha Yaya Diallo DNACA's second show of the season is Alpha Yaya Diallo. Originally from Guinea, West Africa and now based in Canada, Diallo has an international reputation for excellent musicianship and exciting live shows. In addition to dexterous acoustic and electric guitar playing, Diallo is a skilled performer on a variety of percussion instruments and the balafon, a traditional wooden xylophone. He pens his own compositions, and will appear with a bassist, drummer, percussionist and dancer. Sara Broderick presents ~ Art Classes College instructor Sara Broderick will begin art classes in January at both the College of the Redwoods, Del Norte and Southwestern Oregon Community College, in its new location at 96082 Lone Ranch Parkway at the north end of Brookings off Highway 101. At College of the Redwoods, she will teach a drawing and a color & design class, beginning the week of Jan. 16. At Southwestern Oregon Community College, she will give drawing and painting classes, beginning the week of Jan. 9. Both sites are currently accepting registrations.
