Crescent Harbor Gallery presents ~ National Juried Art Exhibit Coast Redwoods Art Association's National Juried Art Exhibit for 2009 is hanging at the Crescent Harbor Gallery most of this month. The show has 79 entries. Awards will be given for first, second, and third place, as well as four honorable mentions, and a people's choice award. The reception for the artists is from 6 pm to 8 pm on Saturday September 5. Gallery hours are 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and noon to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday. Del Norte-Curry Community Concert Association presents ~ Rudolf Budginas The Del Norte-Curry Community Concert Association's 60th season opens with world renowned pianist Rudolf Budginas. Budginas trained at the Moscow Conservatory and in 1994 moved to the United States, where he discovered his passion of giving classical music a broader audience appeal. of the Redwoods, Del Norte presents ~ The ninth annual North Coast Redwoods Writers' Conference will be held on September 18 and 19, 2009. This year's theme focuses on "Building a Community of Writers" and features a keynote address by Jeff Golden, author of Unafraid: A Novel of the Possible. Friday evening features a panel discussion and readings, as well as the opportunity to participate in critique sessions with conference faculty. Saturday morning kicks off with a continental breakfast and the keynote address, followed by a mic reading, book signings and sales, and our ever-popular catered gourmet lunch. This year's faculty also includes poet Susan Browne, agent April Eberhard, writer/farmer/activist Lierre Keith, Heyday Books publisher Malcolm Margolin, writer and editor Anita McClellan, and playwright/documentary storyteller Stephen Most. DNACA's Art In Public Places program presents ~ Solo Exhibit by A new Art in Public Places show will be going up at the courthouse featuring the work of Crescent City artist Lloyd Kirkpatrick. Kirkpatrick paints in oils and does beautiful, freehand calligraphy. His show will hang through November 13. The courthouse is open from 8 am to 5 pm on weekdays, excluding national holidays. Lighthouse Repertory Theatre presents ~ The Fantasticks Lighthouse Repertory Theatre's production of the world's longest running musical, "The Fantasticks," opens with a sneak preview at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 8 in the Crescent Elk Auditorium. Tickets cost $12 for adults, and $8 for children 17 and under and seniors 55 years and over. Tickets for Thursday's sneak preview cost $7 per person. Del Norte-Curry Community Concert Association presents ~ The Canadian Tenors The Del Norte-Curry Community Concert Association presents its second performance of the season: The Canadian Tenors. DNACA presents ~ Hot Club of San Francisco For more than a decade, the Hot Club of San Francisco has been celebrating the music of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grapelli's pioneering Hot Club de France. The ensemble has borrowed the all-string instrumentaion of violin, bass and guitars from the original Hot Club, adding innovative arrangements of classic tunes and original compositions (from the group's lead guitarist Pail Mehling) as well. Tickets cost $18 for general admission and $12 for students/seniors, and are available at Del Norte Office Supply in Crescent City, Mory's in Brookings and at the door beginning at 6:45 p.m. the night of the show. Season tickets are also available at those same locations and at the door, and cost $65 for a general pass, $45 for a student/senior pass, $150 for a family pass. Crescent Harbor Gallery presents ~ Artist Demo by Audi Stanton Audi Stanton will be painting in water color but the information will be applicable to oil, pastel or acrylics as well. Among other things, she will demonstrate her techniques for mixing colors and glazing. She will aslo share information on the need for "muddy" colors as well as bright, clear colors; sort of the yin and yang of painting. DNACA presents ~ The Waybacks Once pigeonholed as a bluegrass band, The Waybacks are currently a tighter four-piece ensemble, reconfigured around the singing and song writing of James Nash (guitar and vocals) and newcomer Warren Hook (fiddle, mandolin, and vocals). Talented drummer Chuck Hamilton and bass player Joe Kyle Jr. continue to round out the group, whose folk/roots underpinnings include healthy doses of Memphis soul, honky-tonk, blues, pop, and more.
