College of the Redwoods, Del Norte presents ~ Digital Photography Show A photography show by J. Mark Renner, instructor of geology, earth and information sciences is currently on exhibit at the College of the Redwoods, Del Norte. The show features local flora and ocean views with special attention to detail and light. Renner's show will be on display through March 15 in the main hallway gallery at the college. The gallery is open for viewing Monday through Friday from

Crescent Harbor Gallery presents ~ Artist of the Month Watercolorist Carmen Hollinsead is the artist of the month for March at Crescent Harbor Gallery. Hollinsead didn't learn to paint until she retired, but the arts have always permeated her family. Her work has been accepted in juried shows and she has a myriad of ribbons and awards for her work including the "Late Bloomer" award at the Oregon Festival of the Arts. Hollinsead has studied with regional painters Marleen Olive, Doroth Ishoy, Duane Light, Rick Bennett and Audi Stanton. A sampling of her work is on display through the end of the month, along with pieces by other gallery members. Coast Redwoods Art Association presents ~ Art Demo by Bonnie Swart The demonstration artist of the month for the Coast Redwoods Art Association is Bonnie Swart, who will begin her demo at noon. When living in southern California, Swart started a course of art studies including classes at Ventura College and workshops with a number of accomplished, nationally known instructors such as Jan Kunz, Don Ricks, William Herring, Donald Puttman and Judi Betts. While helping her husband Carter research racing articles at the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association library, she began painting Thoroughbreds and the general racetrack scene. Her work can be found in the collections of numerous Thoroughbred and Arabian breeders, owners, and trainers. DNACA presents ~ "A Premier Exhibit of Eclectic Shades,
Hues & Values" The new Art in Public Places exhibit up beginning March 22 in the courthouse is a one-person show by Smith River artist Bonnie Loewen. Loewen has only been painting since 2008, and won the first place award in DNACA's 18th Annual Juried Multimedia Exhibition. Loewen paints regularly with a talented group of local and regional artists; in particular, Amy Hallock, Lynda O'Neill, Keith Sluder, Gus Gustafson are among her mentors. Loewen's show, titled "A Premier Exhibit of Eclectic Shades, Hues & Values" will hang through May 21. Steve Luis Benefit Concert A benefit concert for Del Norte High School football coach Steve Luis will be held at the Cornerstone Assembly of God Church. Luis was recently diagnosed with terminal cancer, and all proceeds will help defray medical expenses and will be donated to the Steve Luis Relay for Life Team. Artists include four-time GMA top female contemporary artist Natalie Grant, up and coming pop star Britt Nicole and American Idol finalist Phil Stacey. Artists Wanted Artists of all kinds (visual, performing, literary and media) who want their art to be a self-sustaining business are invited to apply for Arts Salon I, a series of workshops offered by the North Coast Small Business Development Center-Del Norte in conjunction with the Del Norte Association for Cultural Awareness (DNACA). These five workshops -- one per month beginning May 10 -- will lay out the planning, marketing, legal issues, record keeping and more that are necessary for success. In addition to the salon, five business workshops and counseling sessions are part of the requirement. Those interested need to fill out an application ASAP. Summer Youth Choir Camp Auditions Summer Youth Choir Camp auditions will be held at 7 p.m. in the Del Norte High School music room. The Camp is actively recruiting young singers in the fifth through ninth grades from Del Norte and Curry counties. Camp dates are from 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Thursday on July 12-15 and 19-22. The location will be Mary Peacock Elementary School, and music direction will be provided by Amy Ross, Dan Sedgwick and Greg Goode, with accompaniment by Jill Dovre. No special preparation for the audition is needed, and parents are encouraged to attend. "Late Bloomer" Grants Due Today Applications are now available for the 17th annual Late Bloomer Grants sponsored by the Brookings Harbor Festival of the Arts. Crescent Harbor Gallery presents ~ Artist of the Month Steve Mattson is the artist of the month for July at Crescent Harbor Gallery. Mattson studied as a sculptor in wood, sandstone and limestone, before delving into the art of assemblage in the late 1960s. In 1967, the Los Angeles Institute of Contemporary Art invited him to display his assemblage sculptures at a large group showing. His work was an enormous success, followed by television interviews and magazine reviews. When he moved to Del Norte County, he continued to win awards, including Best of Show in 1993 at the Humbolt Arts Council for his sculpture "Thou Shalt Not Steal." A sampling of Mattson's unique works is on display at Crescent Harbor Gallery, along with pieves by other gallery members. To obtain signature status one must be accepted into three years of juried competitions. DNACA presents ~ "Celebrating..." Art Show Winners Thursday - Sunday, August 5 - August 8 The winners of DNACA's 11th annual "Celebrating the Creative Arts of Older Americans," a juried show for seniors at the Del Norte County Fair, have been announced. First place awards went to: "Rabbit on the Beach" (Fine Art) by Muriel Northrip, "Party in a Flower" (Photography) by Betty Depee, and "Winter Comes Early on the Farm" (Agricultural Theme) by Gene Wooldridge. Second place awards went to: "Bear Clan" (Fine Arts) by Linda Ging and "Rattlesnake Grass" (Photography) by Larry Depee. Honorable mentions were also given to Depee, Ging and Northrip. Lighthouse Repertory Theatre presents ~ LRT Seeks Actors Lighthouse Repertory Theatre is working with the Smith River Days Festival to provide a live Smith River Cemetery Walk Through: History of Settlers in Smith River. Men and women actors of all ages are sought to perform; the commitment level is low, and there will be two performances on Aug. 21. Each actor will be given a person to portray and will memorize a small historical monologue. There will be a meeting Monday night, Aug. 9, to go over details and assign people a part. This judged show has vendors, a snack bar, door prizes, a country store and a viewers' choice award; opportunuty and challenge quilt winning tickets will be drawn Sunday afternoon.
