DNACA's Art In Public Places program presents ~

"The Art of Pen and Brush"

You have through November 13 to see the Art in Public Places show at the courthouse featuring the work of Crescent City artist Lloyd Kirkpatrick.

Kirkpatrick paints in oils and does exquisite freehand calligraphy.

The courthouse is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, excluding national holidays.

Crescent City artist B.J. Clausen is the artist of the month Crescent Harbor Gallery during november.

A sampling of Clausen's pieces is available for viewing at the gallery from November 2 through November 29, along with works by other members of the Coast Redwoods Art Association. Her work encompasses collage and watercolor.

DNACA presents ~

The Waybacks
Tuesday, November 3 - 7:30 p.m.

Once pigeonholed as a bluegrass band, The Waybacks are currently a tighter four-piece ensemble, reconfigured around the singing and song writing of James Nash (guitar and vocals) and newcomer Warren Hook (fiddle, mandolin, and vocals). Talented drummer Chuck Hamilton and bass player Joe Kyle Jr. continue to round out the group, whose folk/roots underpinnings include healthy doses of Memphis soul, honky-tonk, blues, pop, and more.

Tickets cost $18 for general admission and $12 for students/seniors, and are available at Del Norte Office Supply in Crescent City, Mory's in Brookings and at the door beginning at 6:45 p.m. the night of the show. Deadline for Entries to 18th Annual Juried Multimedia Exhibition
Friday, November 13 - 5:00 p.m.­6:00 p.m.

Artists entering this show need to bring their entry forms, fees and artworks with them to the Del Norte County Courthouse between 5 and 6 p.m. This show is open to all Northern California and Southern Oregon artists. Those artists juried into theshow join the pool of artists able to mount one-person shows in the future.

Lighthouse Repertory Theatre is holding a BUNCO fund-raiser at 6:30 p.m. at the Harbor View Grotto. The event includes a no-host bar, food and prizes. Cost for the "buy-in" is $20. The net proceeds will go to the remodeling of the Leon "Red" Thomas (LRT) Theatre downtown Crescent City.

Artist of the Month

The Crescent Harbor Gallery's artist of the month for December is actually a group of artists: "The Saturday Painters."

Two groups of gallery members have been meeting every Saturday for several years; the watercolorists meet from 9 a.m. to noon with artist Dorothy Ishoy, and the oil painters meet from noon to 4 p.m. with Amy Hallock.

Gallery hours are 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and noon to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday. For more information, call (707) 464-9133.

Curry/Del Norte Orchestra Guild presents ~

"Dancing By the Sea"

The Curry-Del Norte Orchestra will be playing a variety of symphonic dance music as it goes "Dancing By the Sea" with a trio of winter concerts.

Dec. 6 in Crescent City at Elk Valley Rancheria's community room

Dec. 7 in Brookings at Trinity Lutheran Church

"Christmas is in the Air"
Monday, December 7 - 7:00 p.m.

The College of the Redwoods, Del Norte Chorale will give a free performance of "feel good" Yuletide music. Attendees are requested to bring a nonperishable food item to the concert, where they will be collected for CAN's food drive. The program will include carols of many kinds, bothe American and European, plus a couple of surprises.

Del Norte High School Music will play host to its annual trio of Madrigal Dinners at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 11 and Saturday, Dec. 12, and at noon on Dec. 12 as well.

Monday & Tuesday, December 14 & 15 - 7:00 p.m.

Lighthouse Repertory Theatre will hold auditions for its spring musical, "Annie," in Crescent Elk Middle School's multipurpose room. Those interested should come early on only one of the two nights to fill out paperwork. Directors will be Joey Young and Marshall Jones, with Frank Allard conducting the orchestra.

Recycled plastic art projects created throughout November by students at Del Norte High School and the Community Day School have been on display since December 23 at Talking Crow Studio and will remain up through January 22.

Artist of the Month
Monday, January 4

The artist of the month for January at Crescent Harbor Gallery is Sandy Bonney. A Brookings, OR based artist, Bonney's favorite medium is pastels, though she also works in oils and watercolor. A self-taught artist, Bonney says the biggest step in improving her work has come from attending workshops, given by artists such as Jan Kunz, Maggie Price, George Strickland and Bonnie Swart.

A sampling of her works is on display through the end of the month, along with pieces by other gallery members. The Gallery's winter hours are 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and noon to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday. For more information, call (707) 464-9133.

Reception for Art in Public Places Exhibit
Friday, January 15 - 5:00 p.m.

The current Art in Public Places exhibit up in the courthouse is DNACA's 18th Annual Juried Multimedia Exhibition, featuring 15 works by local artists. There will be a public closing reception for the artists from 5 to 6 p.m., featuring refreshments and live music, as well as an award ceremony.

Awards went to Bonnie Loewen for her acrylic painting "A Garden Talk" (first place), George Cady for his black and white photograph "Chimayo Crosses" (second place) and John Tynes for his color photograph "Sunset near Lost Creek Lake" (third place).

This reception will be part of a Crescent City Art Walk, with participating galleries, studios and businesses (see Art Walk note). For more information, call DNACA at (707) 464-1336.

Crescent City Art Walk
Friday, January 15 - 4:00 p.m.­7:00 p.m.

Ten Crescent City galleries, studios, organizations and businesses will be part of an Art Walk in both the downtown Crescent City and the Crescent City Harbor areas. The public is encouraged to turn out and walk from venue to venue (where possible) at their own leisure, enjoying the local/regional artwork on display.

In addition to DNACA's reception at the Courthouse, sites participating in the art walk are The Daily Triplicate, the Gallery of Arts & Culture, Tomasini's Enoteca, Del Norte County Library, KHSU/KHSR Studio, Mary Dorman-State Farm Insurance, Bay Studios, Crescent Harbor Gallery and Talking Crow Studio. Refreshments will be available at most venues, live music at some.

Lighthouse Repertory Theatre presents ~

"Doubt"

Lighthouse Repertory Theatre's production of "Doubt" opens at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 22 in the multipurpose room at Joe Hamilton School, and will play for two weekends.

The 2009 movie version of John Patrick Shanley's "Doubt" featured Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams, and was nominated for five Academy Awards. This drama is rated PG-13 for mature subject matter.

California Guitar Trio
Sunday, January 24 - 2:00 p.m.

DNACA presents the third performance of its 27th season -- California Guitar Trio -- at 2 p.m. in the Crescent Elk Auditorium.

Not your usual guitar trio -- and not originally from California -- these three gentlemen play steel string guitars, and hail from Belgium (Bert Lams), Japan (Hideo Moriya) and Utah (Paul Richards). They met while apprenticing in Robert Fripp's Guitar Craft workshops, and their whirlwind of instrumental styles fuses jazz, country, classical/originals and even California style "surf music."

The demonstration artist of the month for the Coast Redwoods Art Association is Elio Camacho, who will begin his demo at noon on Thursday, Jan. 28 at Crescent Harbor Gallery. Born in 1972 on the island of Madeira, hundreds of miles south of Portugal, Camacho immigrated in 1975 to California with his family. He fell in love with the work of master impressionists such as Bongart, Sorrolla, Fechin and particularly the Russian impressionists.
